Living on Lopez – NBD

This weekend we were reminded of how lucky we are to live where we live.

Henry and Ruby closed out their respective baseball seasons on Saturday by playing each other’s teams. Lopez won.

I started my Sunday with a 20-mile ride around the South End, passing several friends along the way who were enjoying the beautiful weather. Cynthia on Sperry Road, Linda on Aleck Bay Road, and Carl on MacKaye Harbor Road –  presumably on his way back from stocking the Agate Beach outhouse with magazines and fresh flowers.

This afternoon Kristine milked her first cow, Rose, who provided us with a half gallon of the freshest milk you’ve ever tasted. Ruby and I had a bowl of Cheerios with it as soon as Kristine returned.

Living on Lopez Island, no big deal.

Thank you for smoking

Kristine did many memorable things this Mother’s Day. The most important was probably learning how to use our new Little Chief smoker, in which she smoked salmon for most of the day (it’s a 12-hour process from start to finish.) We ate the finished product before bed and decided we need to keep smoking.

While we waited for the smoker to do its thing, Kristine and I took advantage of a rare kid-free afternoon to kayak around Mud Bay. Thanks to Mr. Mom, Tommer Roush, who hosted Henry and Ruby for a play date this afternoon. We had a great time and decided we also need to keep kayaking.

Finally, thanks to Kristine for being such an amazing mom and wife. Any mom who smokes salmon and kayaks on Mother’s Day needs to keep mothering.

Henry’s First Communion

Henry received the blessed sacrament of First Communion on Saturday. His God parents, Ben and Tricia (and Teddy and James), came up to Lopez for the occasion. Center Church was packed. I wore a sweater instead of a flannel. And Henry cleaned up nicely in his blazer and tie (with a new tie clip in the shape of a chalice). It was a great service.

After lunch, we packed the mini van and headed to Spencer Spit to celebrate. The kids played baseball, roamed the beach and ended the day with roasted marshmallows. A lovely day all around.
