GBR Christmas, Lopez Style

Last Christmas, we went to Nebraska. This year, Nebraska came to us. Jim and Mary Kay arrived on Lopez from Omaha this week, and Christmas Eve has been a nice tour de Lopez for them so far. Center Church for Christmas Mass, Lopez Coffee Shop for holiday cheer, Jones Family Shellfish Farm for oysters and clams. Horse Drawn Farm for greens. And our Mud Bay back yard for Dungeness crab.

This was Jim’s first crabbing experience. We’re hopeful for a few keepers on Christmas day.

We spent the afternoon playing Monopoly while the fire burned, the clams steamed and the crab chilled. Family, fun and food – we could not ask for a better Christmas. Go Big Red, Lopez style.

Fry Family Glass Art Class

image

The Fry Family Quartet learned a new medium today. One of our traditions is to buy the annual family Christmas tree ornament when we cut down our tree. The Lopez field where we got our tree this year didn’t come with a Christmas shop. Luckily, we’d scheduled a family fused glass workshop with our glass artist friend, Terri. We spent this afternoon learning how to cut and construct colored glass that will be heated and fused in Terri’s kiln. It was a lot of fun, and we all ended up with cool ornaments. I think we’ve found our new Fry Lodge Christmas ornament tradition. Thanks, Terri!

Fry Lodge is in the Christmas Spirit

When, where and how to get the Fry Lodge Christmas tree is usually the source of much debate among the Fry Family Quartet. This year we went back and forth between every option – from going to a tree farm off-island, to buying a 4H tree at the grocery store, to cutting down a tree on our own property. The options paralyzed us. Until today, when Kristine noticed a message on LopezRocks.org from somebody offering free trees for people willing to cut and take them away. So that’s what we did. The time between cut-down and stand-up was less than 20 minutes. The kids hung ornaments after school, and just like that Fry Lodge is in the Christmas spirit!

I love Ruby because…

As we sat down for Ruby’s birthday dinner tonight, we went around the table sharing one thing we each love about our 7-year-old princess. Kristine said she loves Ruby’s always happy attitude. I said I love her sense of humor. When we got to Henry, well, there was a bit of an awkward silence.

After some prodding, he said he appreciated that Ruby shared a piece of candy with him earlier in the day. Henry loves his little sister more than he lets on. Despite his momentary lapse over dinner, he made sure today was a special day for her. And it most certainly was – from breakfast in bed to the amazing chocolate cake that Kristine baked. Happy birthday, little girl. We love you more.

Pre birthday party

Ruby turns 7 (!) this week, so we hosted a pre birthday party for her at Fry Lodge this weekend – complete with Christmas cookie decorating, dancing, blind folds and the chaos that typically accompanies 11 little girls high on sugar. One of my favorite conversations overheard from the kitchen was this: “Where does Santa leave presents if you don’t have a tree? Under the TV.”
