Nightswimming deserves a quiet night

We spent 50 percent of our time this week in the pool, so it’s fitting to have ended our vacation with a night swim. It took us a few days in La Quinta to realize the only thing Henry and Ruby really needed was several hours in the water every day. In fact, it’s probably all I needed, too.

That said, Carl and Kaye showed us a wonderful time in the Coachella Valley this week. We loved every minute of spring break – from the wildlife in the Living Desert to speeding in the convertible, to yes, arriving 45 minutes early for mass on Sunday.

Thank you, Mom and Dad, for another wonderful visit. Can’t wait to come back.

Spring Break

The Fry Family Quartet is officially on spring break. We caught the early Friday ferry so we could do some pre-trip shopping and get haircuts in Seattle. Some Molly Moons ice cream got us in the vacation state of mind. Today we fly to Kauai to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary in a few days. The last time we were there the kids were babies. Aloha.

Kayak Season!

This afternoon we motivated to drag the kayak out of the garage to take advantage of the clear sky and calm water. Henry, Ruby and I paddled to the end of Mud Bay, where we were not disappointed. We saw deer on the shore, starfish clinging to rocks, red beaked birds scavenging on little outcroppings and seals poking their noses above the glassy surface of the water. We’re now grilling our dinner as we listen to some of our favorite early 80s Stones vinyl: Tattoo You and Emotional Rescue. Life is good.

Spittin’ it up on Lopez

There was no question what we wanted to do with our first day on Lopez. Right after breakfast, we packed the cooler and firewood into the car and headed to Spencer Spit, our favorite place to spend a sunny day on the island. We grilled, we played Wiffle ball, we listened to Willie Nelson, we napped in the sun. Fittingly, I ended the day with a red neck (we put sunscreen on the kids, Grandma). Looking forward to day 2 and Kristine’s birthday.

Fry Lodge Spring Break

Spring break for the Fry Family Quartet has officially begun. We started the day in Seattle having a picnic with our favorite friends we left behind when we moved to NYC. We then drove north to catch the Lopez Island ferry from Anacortes – but not before we hit massive traffic resulting from the millions of people checking out Washington State tulips in full bloom. We arrived at Fry Lodge Mud Bay tonight with two exhausted – but happy – Fry kids. Please, God, make them sleep until at least 6 AM.
